The witch in history is very different from the image in Harry Potter, Wicked, or the modern day Pagan. A Brief History of Witchcraft sets out to explore how the witch phenomenon began in medieval Europe and how it has continued to haunt us for more than 500 years. Perfect for anyone intrigued by the clandestine, contentious role of witchcraft in history, this book reveals the mysterious layers of characters, scandals, and trials that made witchcraft a timeless universal fascination.
They cant lie about the brief part. This particular book is a quick look at the history of witches and how they were perceived. The book, unfortunately for those looking for a pop culture style read, is more academic than it appears and manages to make a very interesting and often salacious topic a bit on the boring side. The information is well do***ented and accurate, but its not exactly a book that will keep you riveted, even if the information SHOULD be fascinating. The last chapter is also rather superfluous as it deals with a minor part of witchcraft history, a rather odd choice for a short book that already doesnt include a lot of detail. So, interesting for some basic information, but you could probably find a more exciting read elsewhere.
