Synopsis

This historical mystery is the second to feature Matthew Shardlake, a hunchbacked lawyer practicing in Tudor England. Shardlake's current client is Elizabeth Wentworth, a young woman charged with murdering her cousin. Because she will not speak to defend herself or plead for mercy, her execution via slow torture is imminent. Henry VIII's vicar-general, Lord Thomas Cromwell, promises to delay the execution in exchange for Shardlake's assistance in tracking down two alchemists, their secret weapon (a burning chemical called Greek Fire), and the recipe for its manufacture.
