Synopsis

Ann Beattie’s collection contains a novella and nine stories. Three of the stories zero in on the same character, a woman who, in her final appearance, is having a hard time handling the eccentricities of her elderly mother. The novella, ’Flechette Follies,’ is about a man and a woman who meet when they’re involved in a minor auto accident and who then go on to be involved in each other’s lives as she hires him to track down her troubled and troublesome son.
