A group of slaves are stranded on the planet Botany by their Catteni masters. With the help of the Catteni exile, Zainal, they build a thriving colony. But with each growing community comes dissent--some want to return to Earth and help their Brethren fight the Cattenis, while others want to continue their quiet life on Botany, the best they have ever known.
Normally I don't like McCaffrey's type of story, but the series she wrote with these slaves was a departure from her usual story line so I did like it. I was intrigued by the possibilities of developing relationships and partnerships among the various groups of slaves that united against their overlords. The only dark spot was in how she used the excuse of alcohol to overcome the female protagonists reluctance to mate with a human in order to produce more offspring - out of loyalty for her alien lover.
