Synopsis

The hapless unnamed heroine of Patricia Marx's debut novel is a quivering mass of insecurities and neuroses, and while studying in Cambridge she falls hard for the wooing ways of Eugene Obello, a narcissistic philosopher, and falls harder when he dumps her. Back in New York, she gives up on her academic career and gets a job as a television humor writer, but soon enough Eugene, now married, has trounced into town, and begun trampling all over her heart. Patricia Marx, a former SNL writer and frequent contributor to The New Yorker, has only the bare-bones of a plot, but she fills the pages with wickedly funny lines.
