Synopsis

Patrick O'Brian meets Anne McCaffrey in this rollicking debut fantasy, the first of a series set in an alternate world where the Napoleonic wars are fought with dragons. After Captain Will Laurence captures a French ship bearing a dragon egg on the verge of hatching, he knows that one of his crew must bond with the dragon or it will go feral, which would be a great loss to the English war effort. But he doesn't expect the dragon, whom he names Temeraire, to choose him, forcing Laurence to give up his naval command and a potential marriage, to join the much-despised Aerial Corps. Although Laurence must put everything he knows behind him, he discovers that his new partnership with the intelligent and affectionate Temeraire has its own compensations.
