Personalizing the children who belonged to Hitler Youth (1933 to 1945) with fascinating, chilling individual stories, this concise history begins with Hitler’s rise to power and moves on to the development of the movement, how and what its participants were taught, and the ways their roles changed with the onset of World War II. Seen through the eyes of those with firsthand knowledge, a variety of alarming, disquieting stories about this terrible period are brought to vivid life. They are accompanied by B&W historical photographs, a time line, a bibliography, and a useful index. Both a 2006 Newbery Honor Book and a Sibert Honor Book.
World War II or Holocaust books are not something I seek out. But this is a book I will recommend to everyone I know. Bartoletti's content is amazing, showing how the rise of Hitler was not just an adult movement, but an entire cultural movement with children playing a significant part. No so different from other times youth have taken a dominant lead in the culture, such as the roaring twenties and the sixties. The individual stories are amazing. Every junior high/high school should ***ign this one. Kana's reading is spot-on, with authentic pronunciation for French, English, and German. Worth listening to several times.
