Synopsis

Their mother commits suicide, and two traumatized sisters in 1930s China--Junan and Yinan--swear that they will remain together forever. But Junan is claimed by an arranged marriage and, surprisingly, falls in love with her husband. Then the Japanese invade, and he has to flee, and it's Yinan who must try to track him down. What follows--in a story told by Junan's daughter, Hong, years later in America--is marked by not only the politics of the time but the vagaries of the human heart.
