Silver is being raised by Pew, the old, blind lighthouse keeper in her Scottish town, who tells her the story behind the building of the lighthouse--one involving love, betrayal, and disaster. At the same time, Silver's own story turns desperate: Pew's lighthouse bows to automation and, jobless, Pew disappears, leaving Silver on her own. Jeanette Winterson's story is a sad but ultimately hopeful tale that spans two centuries and brings to life both the bleak coast of Scotland and a sun-drenched Greek island.
i read this book for a book club meeting that i never made it to. still, i wouldnt count this a waste of time, except for that this book was pretty bad. it was one of those weird fantasy things, and it was definitely a smart book. just about an orphan who gets taken in by a lighthousekeeper, who tells her a bunch of stories about an old minister of the town/island. pretty boring, but maybe people who like poetry or smart thinking might like it.
