A stirring fictional account of the amazing real-life story of John Riley, an Irishman who led his men to desert the American military during the Mexican-American War, as seen through the eyes of two memorable narrators.
Before listening to this book I have had little knowledge of the Mexican War. Really never brought up in any class in school and a little known subject. Would I probably pickup a book on the Mexican War before this? Probably not. Did I do a little research during the reading of this book? Absolutely! Did I look up John Riley? Sure did! Did I learn anything from this book? Without a doubt. Without a question, this was my least favorite Thom book. Would I listen to this book again? Yes for the simple reason that this brought to my attention and made me think of a period of time that has little interest for me. It is historical fiction, and certain liberties are taken, but I became more aware of a period of time in our history that was presented in such a fashion that would make me look into other books of this era. The purpose of a book, in my opinion is to broaden our horizons, and this book fills the need. As usual, after reading a Thom book, it makes google the first option.
