Max is born old: he looks like a little old man. As he grows up, he gets younger and younger. His life is complicated not only by this quirk but by his love for Alice, who grows older as he grows younger. The action of the novel begins in 1871, in San Francisco, and ends in the 1930s.
The first 40 or 50 pages kind of had me bored, but as soon as he actually meets Alice it's like this book takes off. There is a couple of pages in there that are absolutely beautifully written. You'll know them when you see them, but there is a quote in that section that is now one of my favorite quotes. 'I had to coax the thorns of my life into the spirals of her heart.' So good.
