No book has meant more to me than Georges Bernanos's The Diary of a Country Priest. I have read it and reread it, and I keep it in front of me on my desk. At times I do Bernanos a sacrilegious injustice; something particularly provocative or troubling has taken place, in my own life or in the larger world that we all share, and I am drawn to The Diary, drawn to a number of well-marked passages, which, I suppose, have a scriptural significance for me.
