Synopsis

A Maltese immigrant community in Wales is the setting for this novel about a troubled family: Frankie Gauci, his wife Mary, and their six daughters. Narrated by Dolores, the youngest daughter, who was maimed in a fire when she was an infant, the novel delineates life in a family plagued by abject poverty, an irresponsible father, and just plain bad luck.
