The first volume of Edmund Morris's biography of Theodore Roosevelt covers his life up to 1901, when he assumed the presidency following the assassination of President McKinley. Morris explores Roosevelt's origins and growth, and conveys the robust personality that charmed a nation.
I enjoyed this book. Morris is not afraid to tell us that the likable, heroic rascal was alternately imposing and ridiculous. This reading is exceptional, especially for a person like myself who enjoys chuckling about diarrhea from time to time. Listen for the conspiratorial tone employed by the reader each time the young Mr. Roosevelt is stricken down by one of his famous bouts of what his family refers to as cholera morbus. Exciting, informative, and bringing the LOLs! I highly recommend giving it a listen.
