Beginning with the advent of Gregorian chant around the year 600 AD, THE STORY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC, an informative and lively tour through the history of the genre narrated by conductor Marin Alsop, takes us from seventh-century European monastery copying rooms, where the first music was gathered and written down, to the populist cadences of the eclectic 20th-century composer Aaron Copland. The major differences between the different forms of classical music discussed are illustrated with well-chosen extracts, as are the defining characteristics of the featured artists. One hundred and fifty musical extracts are included, by composers ranging from the visionary medieval nun Hildegard of Bingen to the early-21st century Minimalist Philip Glass, and Darren Henley's script does a good job of simplifying a complex story without talking down to the listener, providing historical contexts for all the musical movements analyzed throughout.
