Synopsis

Unemployed British ex-cop Peter Diamond is rousted from his bed by police for an emergency job only he can handle. John Mountjoy, a woman-hating murderer Diamond arrested four years ago has broken out of prison, taken the assistant chief constable's daughter hostage and is demanding to see Diamond. Mountjoy insists he is innocent and is threatening to kill the girl unless Diamond gets the evidence to overturn his conviction. Now Diamond is in the hot seat unless he can do what seems impossible--follow a very cold trail and miraculously find a new killer. Nominated for the 1996 Edgar Award for Best Novel.
