Synopsis

Sciascia's subtext, which straddles the line between cynicism and despair, is that in an insane society, the quest for truth can only be a psychopathic act. This understanding is the engine that drives Sciascia's fictions, sturdy as they are, to the brink of absurdity: Pirandello (the subject of Sciascia's first book) saw Sicilian society as a hall of mirrors and described it by means of elaborately refracting fictions. Sciascia stacks one crisp line on top of another, but the world he evokes is no less surreal.
