The book was written by Eagle Scout Stephen Hunter with the assistance of fellow Scouts Curtis Hatch, Daniel Hunter, Eric Kalin, James Metz and Jason Palumbo. IIt's a tribute to the men and women who fought and died to protect our freedom, beginning in Berlin during World War II, where U.S. Army Sgt. Chuck Roydhouse suffered near-fatal wounds in helping to free allied soldiers from Nazi prison camps, to the jungles of Vietnam where Navy pilot Bill Lawrence risked his life to complete his bombing mission and ended up serving seven years in a concentration camp, along with U.S. Senator John McCain, and on to the deserts of Afghanistan, where Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot Tommy Gibbons sacrificed his very life during Operation Enduring Freedom.
