An author of the Valley of the Shadow Project presents a series of essays on the American Civil War, the New South, and the twentieth-century South to consider such issues as slavery, secession, and poverty as contributing factors to the conflict. By the author of In the Presence of Mine Enemies. Reprint.
if it was about the civil war and had some real history instead of opinion that would be ok but its just some guy writing his beliefs on the civil war this is not what i thought this book would be 1 star is my descision if there were 0 stars thats what it would be rated
I had looked forward to reading this with its southern edge on the Civil War. Unfortunately, the author has turned it into an autobiography which while interesting adds nothing to the topic of the book. I wish he had spent more time on the topic and less on his role in developing the University of Virginia's digital library. The wonderful insight he has into the southern mentality is sadly lost amongst the trips down memory lane.
